The history of Mediterranean cities is particularly complex and articulated over both time and space. Contemporary urban agglomerations in Southern Europe maintain the intrinsic linkage with the past history, reflecting complex settlement forms and diversified socioeconomic functions. This article reviews the literature on ‘Mediterranean cities' revisiting definitions and concepts, and rethinking at the role of ‘Southern' cities' in an enlarging Europe.
