Training Architecture through Mies’ Houses: The Lemke House in Berlin

The study of the Lemke House represents an exemplary case of educational project in the field of architectural constructions, fundamental to understand the didactic value of the Mies’ work and very important to learn, through such a small building, the deep meaning of the Mies van der Rohe’s experience in Berlin and the delicate relationship between form and construction developed by the German Master. The reasons that lead to investigate this small building can be traced back to two main thematic lines. The first one is the relationship with the teaching at the Bauhaus and with the first didactic experimentations on the suburban single-family house, from which comes, to some extent, the “type” and the “form” of the house. The second one is the constructive reasoning through which Mies defines a clear position on the relationship between form and structure that he verifies not in the project as much as directly during its construction.
