The reopening of the catacombs, triggered by study and religious devotion at the same time, involved reconstruction and consolidation works. The Commission for Sacred Archaeology was from its inception assisted by the architect Francesco Fontana (1819-1883), who will be responsible for all necessary restoration work. A specific methodology of intervention, which in part differed from the criteria for the restoration of classical monuments, was thus gradually defined. The role of Giovanni Battista de Rossi is undoubtedly also central with regard to the choices made to make the underground spaces of Christian Rome usable and comprehensible. Through the illustration of the types of intervention and techniques used in the restoration of Christian monuments during the 1850s, the paper aims at shedding light on a topic that is still little dealt with in the field of historical studies.

Abstract
"... clearing out and making accessible the explored hypogea". Giovanni Battista de Rossi and the restoration of the catacombs Excavations and discoveries in the field of Christian archaeology, that began in Rome in the mid-19th century, were immediately followed by restoration work. Through the illustration of the types of intervention and techniques used in the restoration of Christian monuments during the 1850s, the paper aims at shedding light on a topic that is still little dealt with in the field of historical studies.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
