This book is a study of the manuscript tradition of four anonymous Italian (including three unpublished) vernacular versions of Liber de doctrina dicendi et tacendi (1245) by Albertanus of Brescia (early 13th century - Brescia, around 1270) and publishes these editions. The work of this Lombard judge is a rhetorical and moral treatise which was immediately successful and widely disseminated in the Middle Ages, in both Italy and Europe, as is confirmed by its many translations into a number of Romance languages. To illustrate this study’s starting point to the reader, the volume begins with an introductory chapter outlining the author’s biographical profile and the status quaestionis, taking stock of the history of studies relating to Albertano da Brescia and his work. The state of the Liber de doctrina dicendi et tacendi manuscript tradition is indeed extremely nebulous. Segre and Marti pointed out the lack of studies concerning the relationship between the various Italian vernacular versions of Albertanus’s work in 1959. In particular, the absence of a distinction between the different Italian vernacular versions on the basis of scientific criteria and, especially, of an edition of the anonymous ones, has long prevented comparisons with other Italian and European translations. This book identifies and describes four anonymous versions of the treatise for the first time. These versions differ in extension and structure as well as in the contexts of their dissemination and reception. The first, older and more widespread version is an early-fourteenth-century translation originating in western Tuscany; in this adaptation, the moral and pedagogical message of the treatise was emphasized over its rhistorical precepts, and Albertanus’s secular message is reinterpreted in a devotional key. The aim of the second, more extensive version was to offer a text which was more faithful to the original and recovered its original functionas a rhetorical treatise. The third, later than the previous ones, reduces the source to a repertoire of sapiential material, a mere florilegium of moral auctoritates and sentences, some of which comes from sources other than the Liber de doctrina dicendi et tacendi. The last text is a bilingual version, defaced by the ending and passed down by a single witness, which stands out from earlier versions above all by tits alternating use of the vernacular and Latin. In addition to updating the previous censuses and the descriptions, examined as far as possible first-hand, of the witnesses, this book offers a hypo- thesis of a stemma codicum and the full text of each version accompanied by a linguistic and philological commentary. In publishing a text for each vernacular version identified and highlighting its peculiarities, my aim was to offer readers an overview and an insight into the difference between these versions and their characteristics.
