By the end of this chapter, readers will be able to recognize the different components of sexual identity (biological sex, gender identity, gender role, and sexual orientation), have a knowledge of the factors that can determine sexual orientation, know the main tools used to assess sexual orientation and the incidence of different sexual orientations. Moreover, readers will be able to know the contemporary issues on sexual orientation in clinical and research fields and explain the rationale and benefits of moving to an integrated and sex-positive approach throughout the healthcare setting.
