Il Consiglio d’Europa. Istituzioni, diritti e prospettive

The outbreak of the War in Ukraine was an unprecedented watershed event for European politics and society. This is not only true from a military and economic point of view, but also and especially for what concerns the situation of human rights within the continent. From war crimes to the fleeing of refugees, the Russian invasion of Ukraine further aggravated a humanitarian situation already made difficult by the COVID19 pandemic. In addition, the war has called into question the multilateral and diplomatic approach that has distinguished European policy in recent decades. The key international organization that embraced these values, from the defence of human rights to multilateralism, is the Council of Europe (CoE). This policy paper aims to evaluate the status of the CoE in European and international politics, reflecting on its role and effectiveness in such a difficult moment for the continent.
