The great economic and industrial growth, fueled by technological innovation, by the wide availability and use of raw materials and low-cost fossil fuels and by the globalization of markets, has left significant ecological and social contradictions as a legacy to the new century. The consumption of natural resources and pollution have grown strongly on a global level, the current production and consumption models of the most industrialized countries, based on high consumption of materials and energy derived from fossil fuels, on high environmental impacts, cannot last for a long time, nor can they be extended to most of the populations of the planet. To focus on sustainable, lasting and equitable development, it is necessary to change the current production and consumption models.

Abstract
The great economic and industrial growth, fueled by technological innovation, by the wide availability and use of raw materials and low-cost fossil fuels and by the globalization of markets, has left significant ecological and social contradictions as a legacy to the new century. The consumption of natural resources and pollution have grown strongly on a global level, the current production and consumption models of the most industrialized countries, based on high consumption of materials and energy derived from fossil fuels, on high environmental impacts, cannot last for a long time, nor can they be extended to most of the populations of the planet. To focus on sustainable, lasting and equitable development, it is necessary to change the current production and consumption models.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
