Hassan Fathy has been called the most famous Egyptian architect since Imhotep. But instead of monumental pyramid tombs, Fathy focused his energies on creating an elegant, intimate and sustainable architecture for the people of Egypt. By embracing traditional, vernacular forms, techniques and materials in his campaign to improve the conditions of the rural poor, he also established a new architectural standard in his balance of function and beauty. In recognition of this, Fathy was awarded the first ever Aga Khan Chairman’s Award for Architecture in 1980. Hassan Fathy: Earth & Utopia chronicles his lifelong passion through personal interviews, photographs and drawings from the Hassan Fathy archives, and Fathy’s own writings on the subject, many of which are being published for the first time.
