The Problem of the 'Higher' in Wittgenstein's Tractatus

L’articolo affronta in modo sistematico i temi dell’etica nel Tractatus di Wittgenstein. Esamina in particolare due famiglie di interpretazioni, quelle intuizioniste che sostengono che il Tractatus allude a una sfera di valori che il linguaggio può raggiungere solo indirettamente e quelle neopositiviste che sostengono invece che l’etica attiene all’espressione dei sentimenti (emotivismo). Quindi si commenta l’interpretazione offerta da Cora Diamond, che sostiene che l’insensatezza dell’etica equivale a una radicale irresolutezza della nostra capacità di determinare il senso. In questa luce si mostra come il tipo di esperienza che Wittgenstein vuole raggiungere non può essere descritto né in chiave intuizionista né emotivista e richiede precisamente il tipo di irresolutezza che appartiene al concetto di insensatezza sviluppato nel Tractatus. The article offers a systematic treatment of the issues around ethics in the Tractatus. It examines in particular two families of interpretations, the intuitionist which hold that the Tractatus alludes to a sphere of values which may not be reached directly by language and the neopositivist which attribute to the Tractatus an emotivist view according to which ethical language expresses emotions. Then Cora Diamond’s interpretation is explored, according to which the nonsensicality which is characteristic of ethics involves a radical irresoluteness in our willingness to determine the sense of a proposition. In this light the article shows how both intuitionism and emotivism fail to describe the sorts of experiences Wittgenstein wishes to address whereas these are caught by the kind of irresoluteness which pertains to the Tractatus notion of nonsensicality.
