"A difficult inheritance" : on the defascistization of public space in Italy in 1946-2019

The chapter aims to analyse the defascistization of public space in Italy during the First and Second Republics. The process of removing Benito Mussolini's symbols was very long and problematic in Italy. It was not limited to the so-called political transformation of 1945-1946, but continues to this day. The subject of the analysis will be both normative acts dealing with the ban on the promotion of fascism, ranging from the earliest laws of 1945-46 to the Fiano Act of 2017, as well as other actions aimed at removing fascist symbols from the public space in Italy such as renaming streets, squares, and buildings, and removing other forms of commemorating the fascist regime.
