For a radical symbiosis between city and river

With the same timeliness that accompanied the rise of the myth of the ‘performative city’ where nature is reduced to a “technical infrastructure that makes exhausting life more bearable” (Koolhaas), the current processes of urban regeneration and environmental remedy – begun on a global scale in the mid 1990s – identified the crucial role of such the urban river. As fixed points within the urban environment, they may engender ‘affective memorisation’ processes linked to “elements that are not only visual but acoustic, olfactory, tactile, of Stimmung, of atmosphere” (Dorfles).

Con la stessa tempestività con cui negli anni Ottanta si era costruito il mito della “città performativa”, dove la natura è declassata a «infrastruttura tecnica che rende più sopportabile e ravviva la logorante esistenza» (Koolhaas) nella stagione delle grandi operazioni di rigenerazione urbana e del rimedio ambientale – cominciata su scala globale nella seconda metà degli anni Novanta – si è intuito il ruolo cruciale dei fiumi urbani. Rari punti fermi dell’ambiente urbano essi sono in grado di istigare processi di «memorizzazione affettiva» legata ad «elementi non solo visivi, ma acustici, olfattivi, tattili, di Stimmung, di atmosfera» (Dorfles).
