Abstract

The Sicilian territory encloses many different environments: a lush mediterranean scrub, the rugged volcanic walls of Etna, the sandy habitats of dune systems. And finally, because of the high temperatures, arid and semi-desert areas, placed in the southernmost part of the garden. In the garden this variety of ecosystems will come in a "pocket" version, to offer young users, as well as adults, the opportunity to learn by observing. The educational aim will be complemented by a playful purpose. The area is in fact designed for leisure activities, through the inclusion of references to traditional mythology about Mount Etna. Each play area is dedicated to a myth and regional landscape around Mt Etna, where children can explore the variety of landscape vegetation around Sicily and reimagine themselves in the myths and legends associated with the place. Once again, behind the contrivance of the game, there are interesting insights into local culture and history. The design of the green area includes the construction of a sub-irrigation system to allow for the exploitation and recycling of wastewater, a theme dear to SIFI company, which has been investing in reducing the environmental impact of its industrial activities for years.
