The article, presented for the "Nizami Ganjavi Commemorative Volume", offers an in-depth study of the origin and development of the character of Farhad, the unlucky lover of Shirin in the Persian romantic tradition, in the early Arabic and Persian historical sources, and in the Persian classical poetry, both lyric and narrative. The article suggests a possible identification of Farhad as a historical character, the general-in-chief of the Sasanid king Khusraw II Parvz (590-628 d.C.), and explains the etymology of the New Persian form of his name.
