Abstract
After the publication of the “Esprit des lois”, both Jansenists and “philosophes” condemned as naturalistic and deterministic the theory that climate affects the spirit of a nation. By examining this theory’s development from Montesquieu’s first biological works to books XIV-XIX of “Esprit des lois”, this essay intends to prove that the accusation is groundless. Climate is only one among the conditions which affect the “génies des nations”; it is cause of historical change exclusively in conjunction with other factors of the “esprit général” and, indeed, moral factors are prevalent on physics ones.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
