In this article I examine Heraclitus' fr. 12 DK (40 Marcovich), where the well known metaphor of the river and the different waters present in it is evoked. After an illustration and discussion of the main testimonies and allusions to this metaphor by Plato and Aristotle, I suggest a translation and an interpretation of this fragment in the context of Heraclitus' ontology and cosmology.
