The article reconsiders the question of the apparent aniconism in the cult sphere of the Early Bronze Age southern Levant as opposed to the use of visual imagery in other realms and building on recent proposals to reconsider aniconism in ancient and modern societies. This way it offers some thoughts for a re-examination of the archaeological record for the 3rd millennium BC in this region of the ancient Near East.
