Hollow and underground spaces represent the main focus of Francesco Venezia’s design research. With the aim of creating some sort of eternal spaces, the work of Venezia develops as a continuous investigation around the ancestral dimension of architecture. Abstract

Hollow and underground spaces represent the main focus of Francesco Venezia’s design research. With the aim of creating some sort of eternal spaces, the work of Venezia develops as a continuous investigation around the ancestral dimension of architecture. His artefacts emerge as the manifestation of the passing of time, and the question of memory one of the most relevant themes of his works and of the architectural discourse, at large. For this reason, Venezia emphasizes the role of the ruin in architecture: he assumes that when ruins have ended to be a living matter for architects and started to be the main subject of a new science - archaeology - architecture begun to decline.
