Inspired by his professor of rhetoric, the Uncorruptible became fond of Cicero, to whom he compared himself, defining his opponents as subversives. In his last days, and right after his beheading, he was defined 'a newborn Catiline' by his adversaries.

Abstract
Cicero, a crucial author in French school programmes of the XVIIIth century, was a model figure for the French Revolutionaires, in tat he was a martyr of the Republic. Three examples are particularly meaningful at this respect: the trial aginst the king, where Robespierre and others refuse the popular judegement referring to Cicero's behavior as a consul during the Catiline conspiracy; the trial against a Latin professor, A. Le Teiller, imprisoned for having read some passages of Sallust's Catiline conspiracy in a tendentious way - and then released, but later imprisoned again and convicted to death for a conspiracy against the Republicans; finally, Robespierre himself. Inspired by his professor of rhetoric, the Uncorruptible became fond of Cicero, to whom he compared himself, defining his opponents as subversives. In his last days, and right after his beheading, he was defined 'a newborn Catiline' by his adversaries.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
