The Family System. The study of family gives us crucial elements for the general framing of headache disorders .Analysis the family relationships the weight of headache on them and the phase of the family’s life cycle are important to know for diagnostic and therapeutic implications. A systematic evaluation of the family addresses part of the therapeutic intervention. In the family life cycle events occur and the family needs deep changes for a rebuilding of its organization, roles and relationships. The family life cycle approach has proved to be an useful tool when approaching the family dimension, it considers the difficulties of a family in the lights of its past, the current developmental tasks and the future. The symptoms and the problems may be understood in a relation to the actual family functioning over time. This approach highlights the different family stages from the beginning. Through the stages the family has to solve specific developmental tasks to allow to the next phase. Within the family developmental orientation many authors like Haley, Bowen, McGoldrick and Carter, and Minuchin made important contribution to understanding family functioning through the different stages of the life cycle. The transition to parenthood and that to adolescence of children are among the most relevant life cycle phases. Adolescence is also a crisis factor, Minuchin described this phase as one of transition, with important changes and a redefinition of the boundaries between the subsystems is necessary, the presence of symptoms is seen as a family dysfunction. Olson and the Circumflex Model for the study of normal family functioning, described more flexible boundaries for the family in this phase as a precondition for the adolescent’s unbinding. All the generations are confronted with the task of proceeding towards a better differentiation and individuation.
