This paper focuses on the presence of cultural peculiarities in Pasternak’s translation of Schiller’s play, Maria Stuart. The analysis is limited to the third act and its aim is to classify how concepts are transferred to the Russian text. As a result, three categories of changes have been identified, namely historical, cultural, and stylistic variations. Using the theories of the Russian philologist and Slavist, Dmitrij S. Lichačëv, about language and the „conceptual sphere“ as a methodological approach, it emerges that concepts such as ‚freedom‘ and ‚heart‘ are decisive for a description of the differences between Schiller’s ‚Weltanschauung‘ and the Russian (or Soviet) world view.

Abstract
This paper focuses on the presence of cultural peculiarities in Pasternak’s translation of Schiller’s play, Maria Stuart. The analysis is limited to the third act and its aim is to classify how concepts are transferred to the Russian text. As a result, three categories of changes have been identified, namely historical, cultural, and stylistic variations. Using the theories of the Russian philologist and Slavist, Dmitrij S. Lichačëv, about language and the „conceptual sphere“ as a methodological approach, it emerges that concepts such as ‚freedom‘ and ‚heart‘ are decisive for a description of the differences between Schiller’s ‚Weltanschauung‘ and the Russian (or Soviet) world view.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
