The Royal Mint of Rome was inaugurated in 1911 to satisfy the dual function of factory and place of art. For about a century it housed the production of coins and medals, the School of the Art of Medals (SAM), established in 1907, and a Museum and Library for study and dissemination. In 2007, the machines stopped and the industrial activities were transferred to another location. What is the possible future of the industrial spaces deprived of the use for which they were conceived, also in light of the exceptional link between art and industry? The work is divided into four chapters: the first one is dedicated to the techniques of coin and medal production from craftsmanship to industry, where the author reveals the affirmation of the palace-factory as an architectural-productive typology of the mints in the industrial age; the second one is dedicated to the antecedents and to the planning and realization process of the mint of the Kingdom of Italy; the third to the direct investigation on the building, with the passage from the documents and the histories - of the production, of the technology, of the architectural story - to the built object and to its building, architectural and constructive reading, in order to acquire all the necessary knowledge for the project of requalification; the fourth to the conclusions that finalize the results of the architectural and technological studies to the formulation of the addresses for the reuse and to their verification with meta-design tools, integrated in the apparatuses by the results of the economic evaluations. The text shows a clear understanding of the centrality of technical and economic facts in the field of industrial heritage. This work responds not only to the needs related to the redevelopment of the Mint, but also, and more generally, to a demand for memory that challenges both historians and designers
La Regia Zecca di Roma fu inaugurata nel 1911 per rispondere alla duplice funzione di fabbrica e luogo d’arte. Ha infatti ospitato per circa un secolo la produzione di monete e medaglie, l’alta formazione offerta dalla Scuola dell’Arte della Medaglia (SAM), istituita nel 1907, e un Museo e una Biblioteca per lo studio e la divulgazione. Nel 2007 le macchine si sono fermate e le attività industriali sono state trasferite in un’altra sede. Qual è il destino possibile degli spazi industriali privati dell’uso per cui furono ideati, anche alla luce del legame d’eccezione tra arte e industria? L’opera si articola in quattro capitoli: il primo dedicato alle tecniche di fabbricazione di monete e medaglie dall’artigianato all’industria ove l’autore rivela l’affermazione in età industriale del palazzo-fabbrica come tipologia architettonico-produttiva delle zecche; il secondo agli antefatti e all’iter di progettazione e realizzazione della zecca del Regno d’Italia; il terzo all’indagine diretta sull’edificio, con il passaggio dai documenti e dalle storie – della produzione, della tecnologica, della vicenda architettonica – all’oggetto costruito e alla sua lettura edilizia, architettonica e costruttiva, ai fini dell’acquisizione di tutte le conoscenze necessarie al progetto di riqualificazione; il quarto alle conclusioni che finalizzano gli esiti degli studi architettonici e tecnologici alla formulazione degli indirizzi per il riuso e alla loro verifica con strumenti metaprogettuali, integrata negli apparati dalle risultanze delle valutazioni economiche. Nell’opera è ben chiara la centralità del fatto tecnico ed economico nell’ambito del patrimonio industriale e questo lavoro dà risposta non solo ad esigenze legate alla riqualificazione della Zecca, ma anche, e più in generale, ad una domanda di memoria che interpella tanto gli storici quanto i progettisti.
