The diagram – a wonderful term for its unique quality of being a 'bridge' among disciplines, a reinforcement between doing and thinking – can be understood as a modus vivendi rather than as a modus operandi. I reached this conclusion after reconsidering the multiple and contradictory interpretations of the diagram in the architectural theories of the second half of the twentieth century, but also after wondering about the unexplored potential of a material that shows diagrammatic properties, a material not generated by and with the diagram, but seemingly emerging from its folds with a 'diagrammatic behaviour'. Therefore, I will use the term diagrammatic to define the behaviour of whoever allows those involuntary gestures, those muscular, bodily, and pre-discursive memories typical of primitive formations or, of the embryonic stages of design, emerge in the creative and performative act, regardless of any techniques and aims.

Abstract
The diagram – a wonderful term for its unique quality of being a 'bridge' among disciplines, a reinforcement between doing and thinking – can be understood as a modus vivendi rather than as a modus operandi. I reached this conclusion after reconsidering the multiple and contradictory interpretations of the diagram in the architectural theories of the second half of the twentieth century, but also after wondering about the unexplored potential of a material that shows diagrammatic properties, a material not generated by and with the diagram, but seemingly emerging from its folds with a 'diagrammatic behaviour'. Therefore, I will use the term diagrammatic to define the behaviour of whoever allows those involuntary gestures, those muscular, bodily, and pre-discursive memories typical of primitive formations or, of the embryonic stages of design, emerge in the creative and performative act, regardless of any techniques and aims.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
