Ovidius sapiens. The wise man in Ovid's work

The focus of this chapter is not so much on a philosophical subject or theme as on a philosophical term, one of the most conspicuous of all, given the absence of the word philosophia in Ovid’s vocabulary: sapiens. In offering an overview of Ovid’s poetry— his erotic, epic, and exilic works— I shall concentrate in particular on passages that touch on the semantic field of sapiens/ sapientia. In the erotic works, sapiens is the expert in love affairs, and Ovid is a master in this; in the epic ones, spiens is the smart hero (Ulysses, Brutus); in the exile works, sapiens is the wise man, while Ovid identify himself with the fool.

Lo studio offre un'analisi della semantica di sapiens/sapientia in Ovidio. Nelle opere erotiche, sapiens è l'esperto di tecniche di seduzione; in quelle epiche, è l'accorto eroe che raggiunge il risultato con l'astuzia (Bruto, Ulisse); infine, in quelle dell'esilio è il saggio, mentre Ovidio stesso si qualifica come stolto.
