Mappe e sentieri. Un'introduzione agli studi urbani critici

What is a city? How does it change? Which subjects, forces, powers contribute to its transformation, and why does this happen in certain forms and not others? And then: how are cities studied? What are the various approaches and what is their actual contribution? What is the role of knowledge in the variety of disciplines that deal with cities and territories? This volume is dedicated to Urban Studies, and offers a selection of essays that show the roots of a critical reflection on cities in Italy, indicating a different approach and attitude to research that stimulates the different disciplines to rethink their meaning and purpose, to build a new language, a new shared knowledge and a capacity for vision oriented towards transformation. Three thematic lines: Continuity / Transformation, Material / Immaterial, Institutions / Practices are the essential coordinates for constructing maps; the essays, related bibliographies and proposed 'textual itineraries' identify paths and possible further directions for in-depth study and experimentation in the field of Urban Studies, a field in which a growing number of scholars recognize themselves.

Che cos’è una città? Come si trasforma? Quali soggetti, forze, poteri, contribuiscono a determinare il cambiamento, e perché questo avviene in certe forme e non altre? E poi: come si studiano le città? Quali sono gli approcci e quale è il loro contributo effettivo? Quale è il ruolo della conoscenza nelle discipline che si occupano in vario modo di città e territori? Presentati come importanti antecedenti agli studi urbani, un campo nel quale un numero crescente di studiosi e studiose si riconosce, questo volume offre una selezione di testi che mostrano come una riflessione critica sulle città nel nostro paese non manchi, indicando un diverso approccio e attitudine alla ricerca che stimola le diverse discipline a ripensare al loro significato e alle loro finalità, a costruire un nuovo linguaggio, una nuova conoscenza condivisa e una capacità di visione orientata alla trasformazione. Tre assi tematici: Continuità / Trasformazione, Materiale / Immateriale, Istituzioni / Pratiche sono le coordinate essenziali sulle quali costruire mappe; i testi, le relative bibliografie e gli ‘itinerari testuali’ proposti individuano sentieri, ulteriori percorsi e possibili direzioni di approfondimento e sperimentazione.
