The relationship between the railway and Rome’s historical and archaeological heritage has been both positive and negative for the city’s development. 19th-century modernist euphoria supported projects that flippantly neglected the city’s heritage. While many projects remained on paper, some were completed and strongly changed the cityscape, like the Termini railway stations and the first subway line, which passed just a few metres below the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine.

Abstract
The relationship between the railway and Rome’s historical and archaeological heritage has been both positive and negative for the city’s development. 19th-century modernist euphoria supported projects that flippantly neglected the city’s heritage. While many projects remained on paper, some were completed and strongly changed the cityscape, like the Termini railway stations and the first subway line, which passed just a few metres below the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
