Steps toward the synthetic method. Symbolic information processing and self-organizing systems in early Artificial Intelligence modeling

La Information Processing Psychology (IPP) di A. Newell, J.C. Shaw e H.A. Simon è stato il tentativo di superare la “polarizzazione”, come la definirono i tre autori, tra comportamentismo e gestaltismo, e può essere considerata il vero precursore della scienza cognitiva. In questo capitolo vengono discussi diversi problemi epistemologici della IPP, in particolare la “riforma”, come si esprimevano di Newell e Simon, della metodologia delle scienze del comportamento umano attraverso la sua simulazione su calcolatore, detta anche “metodo sintetico”. In questo ambito, la psicologia non era più considerata una scienza naturale, come lo era stata dagli psicologi sperimentali, ma, secondo l’espressione di Simon, una “scienza dell’artificiale”. A. Newell, J.C. Shaw and H.A. Simon’s Information Processing Psychology (IPP) was firstly a deliberate attempt to overcome the “polarization”, as they called it, between Behaviourism and Gestaltism, and can be seen as the main forerunner of classical Cognitive Science. Several epistemological problems regarding IPP are discussed in this chapter, particularly the “re-examination” (in Newell and Simon’s expression) of the methodology in the sciences of human behaviour through the computer simulation of human behaviour, or the “synthetic method”. In this framework, psychology is not a natural science, as in the usual view of scientific psychology: as far as it is based on the synthetic method, it is a “science of the artificial”, as Simon put it.
