The book, Orson Welles and the Theatre, Shakespeare and Beyond, focuses on the theatrical career of Orson Welles (1915-1985) after the period of his glorious Mercury Theatre (1937-1941) and his most famous film, Citizen Kane, (1941). Although numerous books have been written on Orson Welles, his theatrical career after 1946 remains completely neglected and little investigated, even though Welles has left a notable trace in the contemporary theatre. Therefore, before defining Orson Welles as one of the important artists in theatre history, it is also necessary to reconstruct his entire theatrical career. Orson Welles is probably considered one of the greatest film directors in the history and, at the same time, one of the most misunderstood theatre directors. It is difficult to find an explanation that justifies such an incongruous reputation. Perhaps, the result of many gaps that affect the knowledge of his theatrical career is due to the fact that his work for the stage, like the work of all the great personalities of the theatre, has entered directly into the legend, and consequently has certainly not favored the flowering of serious academic studies. Welles was not only a film and theatre director, but also a producer, screenwriter and actor in both theatre and cinema, as well as the author of several essays, stories and dramatic texts, a painter and a designer of children's books, and often devoted himself to various projects at the same time. In fact, every attempt by scholars to reconstruct Welles's work in its entirety leaves us helpless in the face of a colossal inventory, and with the feeling that a missing piece could complete a puzzle whose meaning for now eludes us.
