Abstract

Is open access sustainable? Detractors of the open access movement have often repeated the question, and still, after thirty years since the first repository has been created, some doubts seem to loom. The open access movement is such a radically new paradigm that needs a change of mind and a period of transition. From arXiv to medRXiv, passing through “green” or “gold” roads, the movement is in search of a broadly, shared, transformative, new agreement in the ecosystem of culture, in the scholarly communication, in the workflow process of information. The open access movement does not provoke economic recession but urges alternative perspectives and methodologies in the market of ‘philosophical’ and economic transactions. And again, open access is not utopian; on the contrary, is based on the values expressed by Karl Popper, aiming at the construction of a democratic, pluralistic open society, empowering a FAIR, Citizen Science.
