The main aims of this book are to present advances in interdisciplinary research into word formation (derivation and compounding) in intra- and interlinguistic contexts, to analyze important problems regarding the tension between intrinsic language change and language interference, and to address the need to use methods of synchronic and historical linguistics in the domains of derivation and compounding. The book also draws on the combined skills of leading European specialists working in these specific linguistic disciplines in order to improve the necessary conceptual and methodological apparatus for exploring the fields of descriptive, comparative and historical morphology, lexicology, and syntax. To meet these interdisciplinary targets, the book aims, on the one hand, to discuss various theoretical and practical issues regarding word-formation in the course of language development within and between several language groups. On the other hand, it provides an impetus for further research into word-formation in contexts of multilingualism through the combined input of morphologists and scholars of historical (socio-)linguistics working from comparative and contrastive perspectives. The book originated with a series of papers given at the international conference Word formation, grammar and lexicology in a multilingual context: between comparative-historical, theoretical, and computational corpus linguistics, held in Rome from February 6th to 8th, 2019, and convened by the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, the Multilingualism Research Group (Vienna), the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the ISMEO Association, and the Norwegian Institute of Philology.
