This project operates on the most critical aspects of the mass housing district, aiming at promoting housing and employment rights, a shared use of the public space, urban health, environmental quality, resilience to climate change and social equity. The complexity of the urban context is addressed with a trans-disciplinary approach and a cross-scale design solution in order to emphasize and counteract the fragility processes from different perspectives. An overall framework allows a strategic approach performing on specific fields and preserving the district layout. What the design solution mostly focuses on is the soil together with groundfloors. The former is intended as too vast and non-hierarchical urban spaces so that is needed a redesign in the light of climate change; the latter are conceived as crucial elements in order to set up a proper relation with street and courtyards. Therefore, as follow the specific fields of the proposal: the redefinition of the boundary between the countryside and the courtyards’ space; the reallocation of the entrances; the addition of new housing types in the lower floors; the achievement of a functional mix through new facilities; the redesign of the street and pedestrian spaces introducing nature-based solutions. Moreover, operating on the underused spaces, such as the rooftop of the building, the design proposal increases the number of inhabitants without consuming further soil. Finally, a new concept of the façade through the insertion of thermal insulation panels allows getting a new elevation rhythm as well as more comfortable and energy-efficient housing units.
