From the historical point of view the technical-economic walls 'in tuff' has manifested itself as a reflection on the territory of a particular administrative system, one linked to the authority of Rome and expressed in the entity's Districtus Urbis: a reflex mediated primarily by those who worked in the construction industry, from simple laborer to the master masons and the stonecutters. This technique is, therefore, a specific expression of the Roman site of the low-middle ages, who qualifies, for example, by the constancy of the heights of the rows, horizontal and parallel actions, the alternation of the joints and the shape of a truncated pyramid of the individual elements stone, a technique that originated from the similar late antiquity, which retrieves the distinctive characters, re-elaborating and systematizing rationally, placing them in the process of standardization typical of productive and economic system late medieval times.

Lo studio analitico, descrittivo e interpretativo della tecnica muraria ‘a tufelli’ rientra nella più ampia ricerca sull'opera architettonica e sulla cultura dell'epoca che l’ha prodotta: ciò è fine di conoscenza in sé, ma consente anche il recupero di spunti critici atti a guidare qualsiasi intervento conservativo o di restauro. L’accurato rilievo diretto delle strutture presenti nel territorio ha permesso di tracciare, nell'area attorno alla città di Roma, l'ambito di espansione della tecnica e di definirne le caratteristiche peculiari, nonché le varianti locali e le reciproche influenze con le altre tecnologie; ha permesso inoltre di riconoscere, ancor prima di studiare da vicino le diverse soluzioni tecniche e formali, valori storici ed estetici nella diffusione e nel carattere del fenomeno. Dal punto di vista storico-economico la tecnica muraria ‘a tufelli’ s’è manifestata come il riflesso sul territorio di un particolare sistema amministrativo, quello legato all'autorità di Roma ed espresso nell'entità del Districtus Urbis: un riflesso mediato soprattutto da chi operava nel settore edilizio, dal semplice manovale ai maestri muratori e agli scalpellini. Tale tecnica rappresenta, pertanto, una specifica espressione del cantiere romano del basso-medioevo, che si qualifica, ad esempio, tramite la costanza delle altezze dei filari, i ricorsi orizzontali e paralleli, l'alternanza dei giunti e la conformazione troncopiramidale dei singoli elementi lapidei; una tecnica che trae origine da quella analoga tardo-antica, della quale recupera i caratteri distintivi, rielaborandoli e sistematizzandoli razionalmente, inserendoli nel processo di standardizzazione tipico del sistema produttivo ed economico tardo-medievale.
