The Formation of the New City. Berlin as the European Paradigm

The paper aims at examining the development of the new European city focusing on the example of Berlin in order to define the extent of its spatial turn. Indeed, the investigation is addressed to the study of the main points and crucial moments that defined the German metropolis and its continuous shift between a bordered/unbordered character. The literary and visual analysis of the urban growth of Berlin, starting from the implementation of the 1920 Groß-Berlin-Gesetz, and the following radical changes in the metropolitan settings, till the massive process of gentrification, supports the comprehension of the liminal spatial turn that resulted in the following cultural turn. Eventually, the example of Berlin works as paradigm of the general European turn in trying defining a new spatial and cultural accessibility.

Il contributo si propone di esaminare lo sviluppo della nuova città europea soffermandosi sull’esempio di Berlino per definire l’estensione del suo 'spatial turn'. L’indagine si concentra sull’analisi dei punti principali e dei momenti cruciali che hanno definito la metropoli tedesca e il suo continuo spostamento tra le condizioni di confinamento e libertà. L’investigazione letteraria e visiva della crescita urbana di Berlino, a partire dalla realizzazione del Groß-Berlin-Gesetz del 1920, e le successive trasformazioni radicali degli assetti metropolitani, fino al massiccio processo di gentrificazione, illuminerà la comprensione dello 'spatial turn' liminale e del conseguente 'cultural turn'. Infine, l’esempio di Berlino fungerà da paradigma del più generale turn europeo nel tentativo di definire una nuova accessibilità spaziale e culturale.
