Alessandro Bausani (1921-1988), Professor at the Istituto Universitario Orientale in Naples and at Rome University ‘La Sapienza’, was a scholar of Islamic studies, with specializations in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Urdu literatures, and skilful mastery of many other languages of the Islamic world. This article represents a first quantitative and qualitative evaluation of Alessandro Bausani’s work as a translator, highlighting his cultural strategies as well as his personal ability to find a middle way between fidelity towards the original and fluent expression in the target language.
