ἁγίοις ἁγιασθεὶς ἁγιάσμασι is a formula which appears in the magical papyrus known as Ritual of immortality preserved in PGM IV 522. Starting from this strange formulation, this introductory essay to a volume devoted to "holiness" in the Classical and Late Antique world and in Buddhism, in addition to offering a framework of the methodology of the volume and its contents, focuses on the linguistic-conceptual interactions of the pagan and Jewish environments, with a look at Hermeticism, seen as a synthesis of Platonic, theurgic, Judeo-Christian traditions.
