Thirteen kilometers south of Sidon, on a promontory jutting out 100 m into the Mediter- ranean sea, called Ras el-Qantara, not far from the modern village of Sarafand, a flourishing Phoenician city, dedicated to industry and com- merce, arose in the 13th century BCE. Already known from Egyptian and Akkadian sources, the city was continuously occupied between 1600 BCE and the Late Roman period.
