For medieval and early-modern readers, the “lyric Dante” is a large and heterogeneous poetic corpus within which there is no clear distinction between Rime, Convivio, and Vita nuova; an ensemble that in some cases, especially in association with Petrarch’s Canzoniere, can be interpreted in an allegorical and moral key. The “lyric Dante” is a poet who places himself under the sign of the greatest metric, stylistic, thematic variety, a constitutive element of the idea of lyric poetry between the Middle Ages and the Modern Age.
