Thanks to developments and progress in printing, the circulation of books enjoyed a particularly lively period in sixteenth-century Italy where the printers’ market had immediately acquired a role of fijirst importance. In spite of the gradual consolidation of the Counter-Reformation and the issuing of the fijirst Index of prohibited books in 1549, Venetian printers still managed to resist and maintain a strong position within the European publishing market, in the face of competition from new centres such as Basel.
