Introduzione a Un Paese che cambia. Saggi antropologi sull'Uruguay tra memoria e attualità

This book is a systematic contribution to one of the keen themes of the cultural debate in Uruguay: the identity and its historic construction. The uruguayidad and its emergence in a Country that was changing, but that during this change its own ideal identity has always been managed to maintain central, along a path where continuity and change have been seen alternating, coming into contact reciprocally and composing into new balances. In broad terms it was dealt to reconstruct the mezcla of symbolic values, cultural heritages and social expressions, which were set up and manifested in different ways and in various historical periods: from a mythicized uruguayidad along the lines of nationalist projects, an emblem of advanced model of social integration, up to a reserve of memories to be drawn as symbolic resource in order to work out the long shadows of the dictatorship that have been deposited in the deep consciousness of the Country. A path, uncertain, turbulent and contradictory, but that undoubtedly constitutes the horizon more significant for understanding this Country.

Paese che è cambiato, ma che in questo modificarsi ha voluto e saputo mantenere centrale il proprio ideale identitario, lungo un percorso che ha visto alternarsi, contrastarsi, ricomporsi in nuovi equilibri, continuità e cambiamento. Si è trattato di ricostruire a grandi linee quella mezcla di valenze simboliche, patrimoni culturali ed espressioni sociali, costruitasi e manifestatasi in differenti modi nei vari periodi storici: da una uruguayidad mitizzata seguendo le linee di progetti nazionalistici, a un emblema di modello avanzato di integrazione sociale, fino a una riserva di memorie cui attingere come risorsa simbolica per elaborare le ombre lunghe della dittatura depositatesi nella coscienza profonda del Paese. Un percorso, incerto, travagliato e contraddittorio, ma che senza dubbio costituisce l’orizzonte più significativo per comprendere questo Paese.
