This essay discusses Tullio De Mauro's (1932-2017) contribution to the historiography of ideas on language. The main point of the paper is that, according to the Italian scholar, the historiographic practice should not be considered a merely erudite one, but has a theoretical relevance, too. The point is illuminated by reference to works such as De Mauro's "Introduction to semantics" (1971, 2nd ed.), his 1967commentary of Saussure's "Cours de linguistique générale", as well as a number of papers devoted to classics such as Epicurus, Vico, Leibniz.
