Giudizi e categorie: i limiti e le prerogative della logica formale kantiana

The metaphysical deduction in the Critique of Pure Reason assigns a primary and heuristic role to the functions of judgment with respect to the categories. However, in the transcendental deduction, judgments seem to owe their logic form to the possibility of being referred - thanks to the objective unity of apperception – to the structure of thought and its categories. A close examination of Kant’s logic lectures and notes leads to the conclusion that he actually assigns a certain degree of autonomy and priority to the logical faculty of judging (and to formal logic), thus eliminating the suspicion of having used it as a mere device useful for exposition, and not as the real thread in the search for the categories. Nonetheless this acknowledgment of priority does not eliminate the price that Kant always asks formal logic to pay, i.e. the inability to deal with, and affect, the contents of thought

La deduzione metafisica nella Critica della ragion pura assegna un ruolo primario ed euristico alle funzioni di giudizio rispetto alle categorie. Tuttavia, nella deduzione trascendentale, i giudizi sembrano dovere la loro forma logica alla possibilità di essere riferiti - grazie all'unità oggettiva dell’appercezione - alla struttura del pensiero e alle sue categorie. Un attento esame delle lezioni e note logiche di Kant porta alla conclusione che in realtà assegna un certo grado di autonomia e priorità alla facoltà logica di giudicare (e alla logica formale), eliminando così il sospetto di averla usato come un semplice espediente utile per l'esposizione, e non come il vero filo conduttore nella ricerca delle categorie. Nondimeno questo riconoscimento di priorità non elimina il prezzo che Kant chiede sempre alla logica formale di pagare, cioè l'incapacità di affrontare, e influenzare, i contenuti del pensiero
