This chapter discusses the tradeoffs an MNE faces when internationalizing its R&D activities. The discussion is based on insights from empirical evidence and theoretical modelling. We will provide an industrial organization perspective on spillovers and R&D by MNEs and an international business perspective on recent changes in the innovative strategies of transnational companies. Empirical evidence on the internationalization of R&D by MNEs will be illustrated. The chapter then provides a theoretical framework, based on the stylized fact illustrated. The model focuses on cases in which R&D activities are undertaken abroad in association with production.
