The German occupation of the Czech lands and the formation of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (1939–1945) posed the subordination of all structures of the society on the occupied territory to the Third Reich. Many organizations were abolished or were transformed into the part of the Nazi administration at least. In case of the Catholic Church was about the established organization which was allowed to carry out its activities, but only under supervision of state. The position of ecclesiastics was rather problematic, especially of bishops and archbishops. The Czech Church in the age of the Protectorate was headed by Mons. Leopold Prečan (1866–1947), the Archbishop of Olomouc (Moravia), who was highly regarded personality as far back as the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918–1938). As a high–ranking official was obliged to be in communication with German authorities, including the Gestapo, which monitored his support of the resistance movements. However, these contacts of Archbishop Prečan with the Gestapo provided the basis for the subsequent accusations of his putative collaboration with the Nazis.
