In German, verbal participles can be used in attributive function with different temporal and aspectual values: present participle (Partizip I) encodes simultaneity, past participle (Partizip II) anteriority. Moreover, Partizip I corresponds to active voice, Partizip II mostly to passive voice. Both participles are syntactically equivalent to relative clauses but not on an informational and textual level. Attributive verbal participles contribute to nominal condensation, especially when syntactically expanded. They are typical of formal written language such as scientific, bureaucratic or journalistic texts.
