In 1970 Leo Steinberg wrote a monograph on Mantegna's Dead Christ (Milan, Brera), never published. According to his reading, the pictorial composition of the painting is not determined by the perspective but by the geometric arrangement of the five wounds of Christ on the picture plane. Starting from this observation, this essay considers how Steinberg links naturalism and symbolism in his interpretations of Christ's body in Renaissance painting.

Abstract
In 1970 Leo Steinberg wrote a monograph on Mantegna's Dead Christ (Milan, Brera), never published. According to his reading, the pictorial composition of the painting is not determined by the perspective but by the geometric arrangement of the five wounds of Christ on the picture plane. Starting from this observation, this essay considers how Steinberg links naturalism and symbolism in his interpretations of Christ's body in Renaissance painting.File allegati a questo prodotto
