Instrumental intervention to achieve vaginal delivery dates back to 1500 BC as evident by writings and pictures describing primitive forceps like tools. The first operative deliveries were performed on women who had been in labor for long hours and, thus, at high risk for death. Most of the time, fetuses did not survive these procedures as the priority was preserving maternal life.
