The present paper aims at highlighting the fundamental lines of Rahner’s argument on "anonymous Christianity", by investigating its theoretical and scriptural assumptions, its position within the twentieth century’s theological reflection, as well as the complex history of its reception. Finally, particular attention is devoted to the ambiguous position this fundamental doctrine plays in the horizon of the enhancement of religious plurality and of ecumenical and inter-religious dialogue.

Abstract

The present paper aims at highlighting the fundamental lines of Rahner’s argument on "anonymous Christianity", by investigating its theoretical and scriptural assumptions, its position within the twentieth century’s theological reflection, as well as the complex history of its reception. Finally, particular attention is devoted to the ambiguous position this fundamental doctrine plays in the horizon of the enhancement of religious plurality and of ecumenical and inter-religious dialogue.
