This essay aims to examine if and how the notion of “holy” can be used to analyze religious pluralism. Starting from Rudolf Otto’s masterwork, the category of “holy” is studied in its descriptive and normative functions. What emerges is both the opportunity of separating “holy” and “religion” and the possibility of valorizing the transcendental character of Otto’s method. In particular, the idea of “irreducibility” allows to bring to light the intrinsic pluralism of the religious experience.
