The linguistic and pragmatic features of the headlines of semi-specialized newspapers and magazines are examined. The functions of headlines are described, together with the kinds of language and cultural knowledge and competence required to interpret them. The focus is on the vehicles and techniques used in crafting headlines, how deep-structural semantico-grammatical and semiotic systems achieve these specific rhetorical and communicative effects.
