The book recounts the results of a research carried out on the places of detention of women that was concretely developed within the Rebibbia female Prison in Rome. Here the reflections and historical and theoretical researches are brought together with the design experiments that have been developed, and partly carried out, during this work. In particular, it contributed to the refurbishment of a detention section and the creation of a space for affectivity, a meeting place for inmates and their families. The research does not work on theoretical proposals for new models of prisons, but focuses on the existing ones and formulates strategies and best practices guides for the recovery of assets in use, for additions or transformations through methodologies that provide for the direct involvement of end users. The basic assumption of the research is that even the prison deserves architectural design and that the adequacy of the spaces affects the behavior and life of the various users, first of all the inmates. To rehabilitate people we must - also - rehabilitate spaces.
