The suburbs were traditionally considered a place geographically far from the center and therefore tend to be of lower quality and value (in proportion to the distance from the center). Indeed they were generally considered places of degradation which, in many cases, was associated not only with the physical aspects and the lack of services, but also with social situations and even characterizing people. This interpretation was linked to an urban organization that has been overcome. The center is no longer one, but there are many, and within them there are many situations of decay. The suburbs multiply and have very different characters, becoming the way in which cities are organized spatially. This allows us to recognize how the peripheries have their own complexity and a very rich and interesting life, in addition to their contradictions and difficulties. This obliges us to investigate the peripheries with other eyes and with other methodologies, centered on interdisciplinary and field work, often with an involvement in ongoing processes, in terms of research-action. Thinking, for example, of the capital, Rome is its suburbs, and the suburbs (despite the stigma that in many cases hit them) are the vital place of the city, a cultural and social laboratory that builds its collective life every day.

Abstract
Thinking, for example, of the capital, Rome is its suburbs, and the suburbs (despite the stigma that in many cases hit them) are the vital place of the city, a cultural and social laboratory that builds its collective life every day.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
